The answer is actually quite simple. The designer Storm Thorgeson (who designed all of their album art except Piper At The Gates of Dawn, The Wall and The Final Cut) said in the Classic Albums: The Making Of Dark Side Of The Moon program that he wanted to represent Pink Floyd's light show, a symbol of human greed and power, which would be the pyramid shaped prism (a poster of the actual Egyptian pyramids were included with the album), and Rick Wright said he wanted it to be "simple and bold." Storm jokes that when the band picked the album cover it was a very brief affair. He had about 6 or 7 options to pick from and each member pointed to the prism and said, "Great, let's do that one." The meeting lasted under a minute. Good question, thanks.
